Understanding the Importance of Achieving Net Zero in the Textile Industry

Welspun India, a leading home textile company, takes climate change seriously and is committed to making a positive impact. In line with their dedication to addressing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues, Welspun India has set its sights on an exciting goal. By 2030, they aim to go all-in on renewable energy, embracing clean, sustainable alternatives like solar and wind power. This ambitious move demonstrates their determination to create a greener future.

Working Towards Reducing Dependency on Natural Resources for a Sustainable Future

The company is not only focused on providing sustainable fabrics but also recognizing the importance of energy management in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and decreasing reliance on natural resources.

With significant steps toward achieving this goal, it has increased the usage of renewable energy sources and implemented energy efficiency initiatives.

With this initiative, Welspun India successfully reduced its overall energy consumption by over 2,00,000 GJ. This reduction has resulted in avoiding approximately 31,814 metric tons of CO2 emissions, helping in contributing to a greener and more sustainable future.

Addressing Challenges in the Textile Industry's Carbon Budget

The textile industry has been identified as a significant contributor to the global carbon budget, highlighting the need for transformative action. Welspun India acknowledges this challenge and recognizes the importance of reducing carbon emissions within the industry.

To mitigate the impact of climate change in India, Welspun India considers carbon management as a crucial step. Carbon management involves adopting low-carbon materials and production processes, incorporating renewable energy sources, and implementing energy-efficient measures.

By embracing these practices, Welspun India not only reduces its carbon emissions but also fosters sustainable operations throughout the textile value chain. This initiative contributes to the sequestration of carbon, effectively reducing the company's carbon footprint and promoting a healthier environment.

Other Initiatives

Welspun India acknowledges the vulnerability of naturally grown cotton to weather fluctuations caused by climate change. To ensure a sustainable and reliable supply of raw materials, Welspun India has embraced hydroponics as part of its climate adaptation strategy. Hydroponics involves growing specialty cotton in a controlled and sustainable environment using the hydroponic farming technique. By employing climate-controlled environments, Welspun India can cultivate crops even in regions with unfavorable weather or frequent climatic changes, ensuring a consistent supply of high-quality cotton.

To ensure ESG in India, they have initiated audits of critical suppliers, evaluating their environmental and social issues. Initial sample audits were conducted to provide insights into the ESG practices of suppliers. Going forward, Welspun India plans to extend these audits to all critical suppliers, fostering sustainability.

Summing Up Welspun India's Commitment to ESG and Climate Change

Welspun India's commitment to ESG and net zero in the textile industry is evident through its comprehensive approach to reducing dependency on natural resources, embracing green energy, addressing carbon challenges, implementing carbon sequestration initiatives, and adapting to climate change through innovative practices.

With alignment to global and national climate targets, active engagement in environmental risk management, sustainable supply chain practices, and thorough climate risk assessments, Welspun India is actively working towards a sustainable and resilient future for the textile industry and beyond.
