Discovering Welspun Living's eco-friendly innovations

It’s 2024 and the impact of the climate crisis is reverberating throughout the world. As humanity mobilises collectively to address this crisis and industries scramble to adopt sustainable measures, some companies have taken the mantle and championed the cause with their pioneering efforts. Welspun Living is among them. They’ve not just come out of the woodwork with the recent advent of sustainable development but have prioritised the cause for a long time. Welspun Living has taken up the sustainability challenge with ambition and aspiration and imbued sustainable practices into their R&D as well as manufacturing process as the norm. They have also championed several initiatives to promote and encourage sustainable practices among their partners and stakeholders, building a culture of environmental awareness and a conscious lifestyle.

A key aspect of their ambitious drive towards a sustainable future is their on-ground efforts to reduce their environmental footprints across the three main elements. Welspun Living champions green initiatives that are purposed to reduce air, water and land pollution across the board. They lead these initiatives with the singular goal of “restoring ecosystems”. Welspun Living is recognised as a global leader in sustainable textiles and caters to a large base of customers. In addition to providing their customers with industry-leading product offerings, they also strive to encourage sustainable living as a responsible choice to secure the future of humanity through these offerings.

Welspun’s clean air program to address the air pollution problem

Welspun works tirelessly to push for inclusive growth and a major non-negotiable aspect of this is clean air for everyone. To achieve this objective, the textile company has taken several measures to address its energy consumption and reduce its overall carbon footprint. These include efforts such as utilising EVs for outbound material transportation and employee commutes.

Additionally, the company has introduced several processes into its daily operations to optimise energy efficiency, utilise cleaner fuels and replace virgin raw materials with recyclable ones. The company actively monitors its scope 1 and scope 2 emissions and reports them to the public domain. It has initiated efforts to calculate scope 3 emissions as well, as per global standards. The company is actively pushing towards an energy mix that consists of 20% renewable energy sources by 2025 and has the target of attaining 100% carbon neutrality by 2030.

Wastewater treatment and water conservation efforts

Welspun Living is also leading the way when it comes to water conservation initiatives with its significant investments in wastewater treatment facilities and utilization of recyclable water. The company has built a unique water treatment facility at Anjar, which is capable of treating up to 30 million liters of wastewater per day and recycling it into usable water. The water requirement for Welspun Living’s Anjar plant is entirely self-sustained as a result of this facility. This project helps recycle nearly 7 billion tonnes of water annually. Welspun Living’s diverse range of products requires a lot of water in their manufacturing process. Especially their spunlace non woven fabric offerings.

In addition to this water treatment facility, Welspun Living also invests heavily in rainwater harvesting at its Anjar plant. The company has established a large rainwater harvesting pond, which ensures the availability of fresh water whenever the plant requires it in its daily operations. This rainwater harvesting project has played a role in reviving the biodiversity of the region, attracting migratory birds and other unique species. Welspun’s water conservation efforts are in alignment with the World Economic Forum having listed water shortage and pollution as major drivers of risk for human life.

Investment in organic farming practices and responsible agricultural initiatives

Welspun caters to a customer base that is conscious of the environment and demands sustainable home products right from the source. To provide such products, the company has invested in organic farming practices to ensure the materials used to manufacture its products are sustainably sourced and do not harm the environment. Welspun Living offers a diverse range of products that are entirely manufactured using 100% organic cotton. It also works with the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) to encourage organic cotton farming and empower farmers with tools to engage in sustainable farming practices. The company plans to achieve 100% organic cotton sourcing by 2030. Organic cotton farming avoids using harmful pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, which pollute the environment and the soil. Welspun Living is working with government bodies to organize training programs for 14,000 farmers which encourage them to inculcate sustainable farming practices and contribute to Welspun’s Sustainable Cotton Program.

Overall, Welspun Living has emerged as a pioneer in the Indian textile industry with its efforts to drive sustainability as an attainable goal for future generations. The company is radically shifting towards adopting renewable resources across all its operations and making a positive impact in the global fight against climate change.
